1. Welbett – Die Matratze
Hybrid foam mattress
Outer structure: The mattress by Weltbett is constructed in two layers. The grooves for the body zone division are situated on both sides. The reason for this is that the mattress combines two degrees of hardness in one, so it is reversible. This makes it a flexible mattress to use. The processing quality of the lined, quilted cover gives an impression of very high quality and the construction is complex. Despite its comparatively high weight (around 15 kilos), it is easy to handle.
Inner values: The Weltbett mattress was impressive in the test laboratory: good stabilisation properties, high point elasticity, low resistance to a change in position and a low shoulder-folding effect. Testers attested that the best ergonomic body support characteristics before and after the endurance test were for the body types A and C. Only the suspension loss factor determined during the roller test was somewhat high. The calculated subjective hardness still corresponds to the specified degree of hardness (medium) before and after the continuous load test, which indicates long durability.
- PRO
- Good stabilization values, stable values, even after durability testing.
- High processing quality, complex construction, simple handling.
- Con
- Slightly increased suspension loss after load test..

2. bett1.de – Bodyguard
QX foam mattress
Outer structure: The Bodyguard by Bett1 has a two-part structure. The layers of different densities make this mattress a reversible mattress with different hardnesses. The zoning is clearly visible in the distinctive indentations and continuous grooves. Processing and accuracy of fit of the cuts on the test samples made a very high-quality impression. The polyester cover is woven in a grid-like manner and is of very high quality.
Inner values: In terms of stabilisation, point elasticity and resistance to a change in position, the Bodyguard achieved some very good values in the laboratory. The shoulder-folding effect measured at medium hardness was slightly higher in comparison, but not critical. Very good values for the body support characteristics were achieved for body type A following continuous load testing on a new mattress. The worst values were measured at medium hardness in the laboratory for the robust body type D. The calculated subjective feeling of hardness was also somewhat softer than would be expected for H3, both before and after the continuous load test.
- PRO
- Complex construction, clean processing, simple handling.
- Very high point elasticity and good stabilisation properties.
- CON
- Only of limited suitability for very robust people, shoulder-folding effect relatively high.

3. Ravensberger – Kaltschaum-Matratze Basis
Cold foam mattress
Outer structure: The basic version of the Ravensberger mattress comprises one piece. Continuous grooves of varying depths and widths provide for body-related zoning. The cover is comparatively thickly lined and neatly quilted but as a whole it made only a moderate impression and was constructed quite simply overall. However, as with all the test mattresses, the washability is very good and the handling easy overall.
Inner values: The average external impression is more than compensated for by the measurement data in the laboratory: the experts attested that the mattress has good to very good body support characteristics for body types A, B and C. These were still mostly good following the continuous load test. The Ravensberger mattress also scored low values for resistance to change in position, shoulder-folding effect and also has high point elasticity. Only the values for stabilisation were somewhat low. All in all, and especially at these costs, the Ravensberger mattress is a worthy winner in terms of price-performance.
- PRO
- Good to very good ergonomic body support characteristics for many body types.
- Easy handling and very good washability.
- CON
- Somewhat low stabilisation values, trial period somewhat short (30 days).

3. Emma – Emma One
Airgocell/HRX/Visco foam mattress
Outer structure: With Emma One, there are two top layers above the actual mattress core. With the dark blue of the two top layers, large pores (gas inclusions) are clearly visible. The main layer has the typical profile notches and round incisions responsible for zoning. The mesh-grid-like cover is very thin but still of high quality, but the overall construction is rather simple.
Inner values: The measurements showed low resistance to a change in position and high point elasticity but also somewhat weaker stabilisation properties. The shoulder-folding effect is also low. Striking: the general body support characteristics were good for almost all body types with new mattresses. Even more striking: after continuous load tests, they were even slightly better in some cases. From this, we can assume that they will last a long time. The calculated subjective degree of hardness, however, turned out to be somewhat harder than would have been expected for the specified hardness (H3).
- PRO
- Thin mesh grid cover is neatly made.
- Versatile thanks to good ergonomic body support characteristics for almost all body types.
- CON
- Somewhat weaker stabilisation values.
- Feels a bit harder than expected.

5. Casper – Casper Essential
Visco foam mattress
Outer structure: Two layers are clearly visible on the Casper Essential. The bottom layer shows a corrugated structure typical of many multi-zone mattresses with different profile depths depending on the zone. Processing and accuracy of fit of the test samples made a high-quality impression. The polyester cover is the only one in the test to be completely black and very finely woven, making the structure difficult to see at first glance.
Inner values: The laboratory measurements generally showed that the mattress had high point elasticity, but somewhat weaker stabilisation values and a slightly pronounced shoulder-folding effect. The resistance to change of position was in turn low. Laboratory experts found that the best overall body support characteristics were for body types A and C – both when new and following the continuous load test. The calculated subjective feeling of hardness is in line with the hardness grade “medium”, but following the continuous load test and under the influence of humidity and temperature it became somewhat softer.
- PRO
- Very high processing quality, easy handling and good washability.
- Good body support characteristics for body types A and C, high point elasticity
- CON
- Slightly increased shoulder-folding effect, somewhat weaker stabilisation.

6. Betten-ABC – OrthoMatra VISCO-50
Visco cold foam mattress
Outer structure: The OrthoMatra by Betten-ABC has a two-layer structure. The bottom layer, unlike many other two-layer test mattresses, has profile incisions on the bottom side that create the zoning of the base. The hard-wearing polyester cover has a high-quality fi nish and is considerably more voluminous than other models thanks to the lining, which can make handling a little more complicated, for example when washing.
Inner values: The quality of processing and construction is very high with the OrthoMatra. It looked a little different on the test bench, however: the values for stabilisation and resistance to change in position were somewhat weak. In addition, the measured contact area was the second highest in the test at just over 75 per cent. The experts measured a high point elasticity and a low shoulder-folding effect. Nevertheless, the laboratory attested that the mattress has good body support properties for all body types – at least when new and when sleeping on the back. The subjective hardness also largely corresponded to the hardness stated.
- PRO
- Very high processing quality and complex construction.
- CON
- Somewhat low residual height under load, no trial period.
- Somewhat weak stabilization values, high resistance to change in position.

7. BeCO – Gumo
Gel foam mattress
Outer structure: The Beco mattress has three different layers on the outside. Thanks to the corresponding groove profiles, the middle, thickest layer creates different resistances and thus enables division of the mattress for body zones of varying weights. The thick, lined and quilted cover is a high-quality construction and the quality of processing is high overall. The handling is somewhat more difficult despite the low weight.
Inner values: The laboratory measurements prove that the Beco mattress has very low resistance to a change in position and very low shoulder-folding effect. However, the values for stabilisation and point elasticity are somewhat weaker than for the other test mattresses. The experts found that the mattress offers the best ergonomic body support characteristics for body type C when new, in both side and back sleeping positions. Following the continuous load test, however, these values were only satisfactory (side position) or adequate (back position).
- PRO
- Very high processing quality and complex construction.
- CON
- Somewhat weak stabilization properties and low point elasticity.

8. IKEA – Myrbacka
Memory/cold foam mattress
Outer structure: One of the bestselling items in the Ikea bed department is called “Myrbacka”. Comprising three layers, the memory foam mattress is divided into the different body zones by the matching cuts in the bottom two layers. The thick, quilted cover is smart and of high quality, the construction is complex overall. At a good 16 kilos, the Myrbacka is the heaviest mattress in the test.
Inner values: Except for the very low shoulder-folding effect, the measured values for this mattress were rather mediocre. The resistance to a change in position is somewhat high, whereas the point elasticity is somewhat low. The stabilisation properties were also rated weaker overall. Accordingly, the results for the general ergonomic body support characteristics for most body types were only in the mid range. The calculated subjective hardness corresponded to the specification “medium” when the mattress was new, but changed to “soft” following the continuous load test.
- PRO
- High processing quality and easy handling despite high weight.
- CON
- Only mediocre body support characteristics for most body types.
- Weak stabilisation values, extended cancellation period instead of trial.

9. Arensberger – RELAXX 7-Zonen 3D-Memory
Cold/Visco Smart Memory foam mattress
Outer structure: The Arensberger RELAXX mattress has two layers externally, which are connected to each other without profiles or notches. The profile structures that form the zones on the upper layer are very striking. Similar to other mattresses of this type, the core is hidden by a slightly thicker lined and quilted cover. The processing quality is very high, the construction rather complex overall.
Inner values: In the laboratory, experts determined that this mattress had the second highest point elasticity but also a more pronounced shoulder-folding effect and high resistance to a change in position. Overall, the body support characteristics were rated good only for body type B when sleeping on the back, otherwise the values were in the midrange. As this is a memory foam mattress, it takes longer for the mattress to return to its original state after being subjected to a load. This effect (“hysteresis”) was not assessed separately. It is suited to sleepers who do not move around very much in their sleep.
- PRO
- Complex construction and high processing quality.
- CON
- High resistance to a change in position, somewhat pronounced shoulder-folding effect.
- Only mediocre body support characteristics for most body types.

10. Dänisches Bettenlager – ErgoMAXX Energie
Comfort foam mattress
Outer structure: The ErgoMAXX Energie from Dänisches Bettenlager comprises one single piece. One consequence of this is that the profile structure required for zoning is found directly on the top and bottom sides of the mattress. However, thanks to the thickly lined cover, the grooves are not noticeable for sleepers. The processing quality is high, but construction rather low quality which can be problematic when changing or washing.
Inner values: Tests in the laboratory revealed a low shoulder-folding effect as well as equally low resistance to a change in position. On the other hand, the values for the stabilisation properties and the point elasticity were worse. The body support characteristics were only good when new – and only for body types B and D in the back position. For all the others and after the continuous load test, the verdict was mostly “adequate” at best, even “poor” in some cases. After all, the calculated degree of hardness corresponds approximately to the specification.
- PRO
- Low shoulder-folding effect, low resistance to a change in position.
- CON
- Point elasticity somewhat low, body support characteristics generally only adequate.
- Body support characteristics only good for body types B and D in back position.
